RTJ Return with the Politically Antagonistic and Ominously Tense ‘Run the Jewels 3’

At the culmination of one of the most culturally and politically confounding years in American history, one thing remains obvious – Run the Jewels’ feverish energy is capable of sustaining the duo as hip-hop’s foremost political tour de force. Their relentless energy aside, the past year has undoubtedly taken its toll on rapper/political activist Killer Mike and his cohort El-P. While the fervor and angst which marked the genius of their breakout album Run the Jewels 2 has maintained, this energy has taken new form. Whereas Run the Jewels 2 was the left-wing cynic’s cathartic explosion, Run the Jewels 3 is about the turbulence of tension swelling beneath the surface of a brooding and uncertain political moment.

The rap duo’s third eponymous installation is a thesis on their politics, brimming with the sarcasm and humor that colors their wit and socio-political consciousness. Lyrically, Killer Mike and El-P are pristine, emphatic, provocative and earnest. Replete with impressive internal rhymes, their verses alternate with the same chemistry they discovered in their sophomore release and they communicate their ideas with an urgency as volatile as the political change of guard. RTJ3 begins with “Down,” a lament of the impoverished conditions of their lives prior to RTJ’s success. The song’s woozy synth instrumental feels spatially distant and pairs well with the dreams of socio-economic ascension sung in the chorus: “But even birds with broken wings want to fly.”

The song precedes the album’s first-released single “Talk to Me,” which garnered wide-spread notice for its pointed insults: “Went to war with the Devil and Satan / He wore a bad toupee and a spray tan.” The sequencing of these two songs is prudent and honest; the album begins at a point of vulnerability before reinvigorating and remobilizing the audience against political corruption. “Talk to Me” recapitulates the past year’s political context while outlining RTJ’s unapologetic brand of politics. “Born black / That’s dead on arrival,” Killer Mike raps, “My job is to fight for survival / In spite of these #AllLivesMatter-ass white folk.”

The album’s lyrics speak generally on RTJ’s shared political outlook, but Killer Mike does not shy from the specific experiences he had while supporting Senator Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign. On “Hey Kids” Mike defends his support for Sander’s proposed tax increase on the wealthy, rapping “… got big ideas, got plans to rob / Any Rothschild living, Bill Gates, and the ghost of Jobs.” His verse on “A Report to the Shareholders" includes the lines “Choose the lesser of the evil people / And the devil still gon’ win” and “Ooh, Mike said ‘uterus' / They acting like Mike said ‘You a bitch.’” The latter refers to Killer Mike’s controversial reference to activist Jane Elliott, who said “A uterus doesn’t qualify you to be president of the United States.” Killer Mike stands firm behind the assertions he made as a Bernie Sanders surrogate and spares none from a well-crafted diss.

When Run the Jewels 3 isn’t a manifesto, it is humorous braggadocio laced into bass-heavy instrumentals that glimmer with disorienting synths. Its features are potent and carefully selected. Danny Brown begins the new year as successfully as he ended the last one with the critically acclaimed Atrocity Exhibition. Brown’s eccentricity and charisma render him a perfect RTJ  collaborator and his guest feature on “Hey Kids” supplements the album’s edge and personality. Rapper Trina provides the assertive hook on “Panther Like a Panther” – a welcomed return to the riot-inciting intensity of RTJ2. Elsewhere, Kamasi Washington provides a melacholic saxophone backing to the chorus on “Thursday in the Danger Room” and Rage Against the Machine frontman Zach de la Rocha anchors the album with the closing verse on “Kill Your Masters.”

Run the Jewels 3 is such an astute examination of recent politics that it becomes difficult to imagine Run the Jewels outside the context of an election year. Their confrontational and steadfast progressivism and their crude but clever comedic sensibility yield an album that perceptively chronicles a time of uncertainty, discontent, and divisiveness. They are rap’s best active duo and best political antagonists and yet, they remain focused on the collective welfare: “Not from the same part of town / But we both hear the same sound coming,” El-P raps on “A Report to the Shareholders,” “And it sounds like war / And it breaks our hearts.” With RTJ3, Run the Jewels have captured the zeitgeist of the past election year’s hysteria. It is a call to action, a political doomsayer’s passionate monologue to an uneasy crowd, and a fire that will burn in your belly.

Donald Glover’s 'Atlanta' Gets It Just Right

In the age of Hollywood whitewashing and an all-too-often general failure to represent minorities realistically in film and television, Donald Glover’s Atlanta is a breath of fresh air. Glover combines his experiences growing up in Stone Mountain, Georgia with his skills as a writer, actor, and rapper to showrun the new FX series that is entirely worth the hype.

Atlanta centers around Earn (Donald Glover), a young man taking time off of college for unexplained reasons. He’s broke, working a job he hates, and living with his ex-girlfriend Van (Zazie Beets) with whom he has a daughter. In an attempt to get his life back together he reaches out to his cousin Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry), a local rapper known as Paper Boi, and asks to manage him. Alfred is always accompanied by his right hand man Darius (Keith Stanfield) whose perpetually high persona helps him craft stellar one liners. Throughout the rest of the episode, we witness the dynamics of Earn’s relationships with his parents, old friends, and coworkers as well as a look into his day-to-day life setting up a solid foundation for the upcoming episodes.

Equipped with a group of talented black writers, the authenticity of the characters and their stories shines through right off the bat. Glover strives to make the audience feel the experiences of African Americans rather than explicitly state it through exhaustive dialogue, and he does so with a seamless balance of drama and comedy perfectly paced within a twenty-five-minute episode.  The comedic moments never leave you laughing out loud, but are instead subtly inserted with flawless timing - you can’t help but let a chuckle escape you. Also, the lack of exposition during dramatic moments is crucial in making a point when the episode addresses serious issues such as gun violence and unstable family life. The series opener never felt preachy or melodramatic, just simply a slice of life. These more serious moments didn’t need to be tragic and heartbreaking to still leave an impact. It shows maturity in its writing, something often lacking in pilot episodes.

Visually, the show doesn’t do anything out of the ordinary or groundbreaking. There are no crazy special effects, unnecessary camera movements, or anything jarring and distracting. Instead, the moody tones (shout out to the colorist), the simple yet powerful cinematography, and the clean editing allow for full focus on the characters and the story. Everything from the drone shots of Atlanta to the wardrobe of each individual character creates an incredible sense of setting adding to the show’s genuineness.

Glover and his writers create a realistic portrayal of what its like to be black in America in a way in which, if written by anything less, would leave these characters, their conversations, and their experiences culminating in a show inauthentic and loaded with empty stereotypes. In a time where Atlanta is increasingly hitting a cultural stride, Atlanta gets its representation just right.

Atlanta's Malachiae Warren Talks Background, Beginnings, and 'Heard U Was In My City'

Starting at the age of just 12, R&B crooner Malachiae Warren began his singing career through YouTube and school talent shows before moving on to recording at 14. Coming from a family with an extensive musical background provides its advantages, and the now 20 year-old talent is currently taking huge strides in leaving his mark on his home city of Atlanta, bringing fresh life into a scene that so craves the new talent. Warren - better known as Chiae - continues to develop his skills in writing, producing, and singing with his creative partner, Jasper Cameron, and released his major label debut EP, Heard U Was In My City, via Universal's Motown Records on March 25.

We met up with Chiae to discuss his background, beginnings, and the new EP.

TRANSVERSO: Tell us about Heard U Was In My City.

WARREN: [The single] “Minute Made” is a new sound from me, coming all the way from my first single “Thank Yo Momma (feat. Migos)” that came out a few years earlier. For this record, you know, a bad seed came through town and didn’t know what she wanted, so this new music is just a way to express that feeling from me personally.

What's the story?

The way it went was this girl - an ex girl of mine - would come and kick it with me in Atlanta, but she wanted more out of the relationship than I wanted to give at the time. She ended up coming back to the city, but she didn’t call me when she did. So my mind was racing, thinking, “Who’s she with, who’s she talking to?” That sort of thing. I just felt that regret kicking in. So the EP takes little pictures, moments, and feelings from that time in my life, and I just made what I was feeling.

How has coming from Atlanta and being a product of that culture and vibrancy affected your music?  

First and foremost, I love Atlanta. I was born and raised here, so of course I have to always represent. It’s just a great place to be, especially in the entertainment field. You meet a ton of like minds down here; it’s just really easy to connect to people. The only downside is that there’s just a ton of competition to face, but when you find your sound and you stand out, that’s what people pay attention to. That’s what people will gravitate to. You just have to find yourself and run with it.

From whom do you pull inspiration?

Gotta shout out to Atlanta, so Monica, Ludacris, Usher, and people of that nature. But I listen to a lot of other stuff too. I’m a big hip hop fan, so I got a lot of love for Future and Drake - even the greats like Jay Z and Tupac. I get a little bit of influence from every genre.

Have you considered working with other artists similar in style like The Weeknd or Travis Scott?

Yeah, absolutely. Right now though, I’m focusing on finding myself and my sound - the thing that will make me unique and stand out. But I would love to branch out and work with other artists that have the same vision as I do for their music.

You mix a lot of different styles in unorthodox ways, like inserting an almost '80s hair metal / anthemic sounding guitar into hip hop. How and why do you experiment with these different generations and cultures?

That’s crazy that you noticed that. I’m just into music, man. I really just do what I feel and put in what sounds right, no matter what I’m doing. I’m not here to follow trends or fit into standards, that’s just not me. I put passion into anything I do. We bring live bass players into the studio to bring that extra feel into the sound, bringing the old school back to the new stuff, that kind of thing.

Since I’m so young, I look at my generation, and I see how easily influenced we are. So I try to strike a balance that can find all of those different listeners. And that’s not to say that I won’t do the turn up songs, I just feel like you have to have that balance. I might do those types of songs, but I’m going to keep doing songs about love, songs that make people feel good in general. You’ve gotta have fun, but you’ve gotta have the downtime too. It’s a balance. If you turn up for too long, you’re gonna crash after a little while.

You’re only 20 years old. How does it feel being such a young artist at this level in the music industry?

It feels great, man. I just count my blessings and just do my best to remember why I’m here and who got me here. It’s just another way to prove to people my age that dreams do come true, so never listen to that negativity in your life. Keep on moving forward.

What brought you to music in the first place?

[It’s] crazy, man, because I was doing a whole lot before music. I was acting a little bit, actually. But this whole thing started with me doing some comedy sketches on YouTube. I’d add some singing at the end there, just a little snippet of a song, not anything serious, just to maybe show some viewers that I could sing. When I woke up the next day, the comments were just going crazy. Girls were going crazy over it, so I thought why not, and started singing more. I actually played my school’s talent show and the same thing happened, girls went crazy over it. That’s what made me want to pursue music a little more from then.

You've also gone on to start a brand called LoveLife.

It’s just something that we do to present a message— loving life, loving your music, loving yourself. We need more positivity in this generation, in this genre, everyone’s gotta love their life, you know, go forth and don’t be afraid to follow your passion. It’s nobody else’s life, and nothing’s holding you back, so go chase it.

So what's next?

We’re really just focusing on this EP that I just put out and the focus of that release, “Minute Made.” I’ve just been running around Atlanta, getting my name out and talking to the clubs and the DJ’s, all of those guys, just grinding it out. I really wanna see my fans up close and personal, so I will definitely be hitting the road in the next few months. Right now I’m just working on getting my name out down home, but when I hit the road, I’m gonna be hitting those cities hard.

It seems Big Boi is not the only Atlanta rapper chopping it up with presidential candidate Bernie Sanders these days. Run the Jewels' Killer Mike played the role of the politician's dining companion and hype man in the Georgia capital yesterday, leading to chicken at Busy Bee and an opening speech that was, well, straight fire.

The photo of the dynamic duo indulging in some southern soul food is especially intriguing considering Sanders is around six feet tall and is still dwarfed by the rapper.

Killer Mike, who is an aspiring politician himself, cited Sanders' support of the Voting Rights Act and making education and healthcare American rights in his rousing endorsement of the senator which surely left Hotlanta "feeling the Bern."

"I have no time in my short 40 years on this Earth to relive the Reagan years. I have no time... to see us elect our own Margaret Thatcher," he bellowed before concluding, "In my heart of hearts, I truly believe that Senator Bernie Sanders is the right man to lead this country."

It's a little known fact that the Vermonter actually released a folk album available only on tape cassette back in the '80s, which begs the question, will we see a music collaboration next? In the meantime, we have this delightful photo of the pair combining to form the Run the Jewels hand gesture, which will undoubtedly be called a gang sign on Fox News in the morning.

Black Lips Discuss Being Attacked by Fans, "Freedom Fries," and Labios Negros

Atlanta garage-rock band Black Lips have been together for 16 years, earning a reputation notorious for provocative and insane stage antics including vomiting, fireworks, electric R.C. car races, chickens, and flaming guitars just to name a few. Black Lips are always ready to having a good time.

Currently picked up by Red Bull to preform a four-city tour, Black Lips stopped by their home-away-from-home, Athens, GA to preform a free show. I sat down with Cole Alexander, one of the founding band members, to talk about touring, their new single "Freedom Fries," and what it’s like to be in a band for so long.


TRANSVERSO MEDIA: So you’re part of Red Bull Sound Select, how did you get involved with them?

BLACK LIPS: We’ve done some events with Red Bull in the past. They kind of regularly do events in Atlanta and I’m sure all over the country but they had good selection of music so we’re down to get involved. Sometimes it’s weird working with a corporation but they’ve been cool with the act they’ve picked. Like we got to play with Juicy J of Three 6 Mafia who is someone we grew up listening to in like the late 90s.  I don’t think we would ever have gotten to play with him if it wasn’t for Red Bull. I think they’re doing a good job picking bands and putting together cool projects that makes the bands want to get involved.

You guys are known for crazy stage antics. I heard last time you guys were [at Athens venue 40 Watt Club] there were fireworks involved?

That was a long time ago! Um, sometimes some crazy things happen and those things get written about. Like, if you look at our Wikipedia it mentions these crazy things that have happened but it’s not like ever night we have this formal [plan]. It’s not indicative of our real band.

What’s the most insane thing that’s happened on stage?

I mean, we have fans attack us and stuff and kind of riot. Throw bottles and stuff. Sometimes crazy stuff happens but people get the wrong idea. We pretty much just play music like other rock bands with a lot of energy. Sometimes things pop off but we never want to do a forced thing. Like every night we are trying to start something, we just let it happen naturally.

Where is your favorite place to tour?

We haven’t really toured Mexico per se, but we’ve played a few cities there and I really like it. We played Mexico City and that was really nice. We played in Istanbul, I like that city a lot. Japan is pretty fun. There are a lot of cool places. There’s something fun about everywhere but those are some of my favorites.

Earlier this week you released a 7” with fellow Atlanta band Coathangers called “Freedom Fries.” What can you tell us about that?

Yeah, Coathangers is like our sister band. They’ve been going for a long time and touring. We’ve done a tour with them but never done some sort of project like that so we deicide to do a split 7” and used a left over song from our last album.

You guys have been a band since 1999. What would you tell yourself 16 years ago when you were just starting?

I guess, you know tough it out, it’s going to be better. In the beginning the first six years is really hard and it’s discouraging. We were kind of struggling the first six and I was working a day job to make the ends meet in between tours so it was kind of hard. There was a point where I wanted to quit trying to tour so much but they we held on just long enough and then the ball started rolling and we picked up some momentum to do it more comfortably now.

What’s your favorite song to preform on stage?

I don’t know… We were doing soundcheck for this song “Not Go Home” and I like doing that one.

If you weren’t called Black Lips what would you be called?

Labios Negros.

What’s a song you hate?

Um, I don’t like that Macklemore song about the thrift store. But I like talked crap about him in an interview and I felt bad because I heard he’s a really nice guy. I don’t like that song but I’m sure he’s a cool guy.

Since you’ve been a band for so long now, how do you guys stay relevant without losing yourselves?

Sometimes we get a little tired or rusty, but we’ve had some member changes so that helped us sort of reinvent ourselves a little bit. Like, we just got our old guitarist back so that’s brought new energy to the band and new chemistry. Me, Joe the drummer, and Jared the bass player have always been consistent in the band. So, like, the extra guitar has been always a wild card.

Anything else you want to add?

It’s good to be back in Athens. It feels like home-away-from-home because it’s so close to Atlanta and they have a good scene, so its good to be back!
